The two returned to the now empty remnant of a home where they had buried the demoness mother. As Hikaru knelt at teh foot of the grave, Kyo returned the clothes he had been carrying to their dresser.
Once he finished he went back downstairs and outside to comfort Hikaru.
"She'll always be close and watching you," he stated and paused before speaking again. "Come on inside Hikaru. We'll do our best to get some rest tonight. In the mean time we have to think of some way to make money to get the house restored. IT wont be easy. Not just anyone will hire kids."
He ushered her inside and upstairs to her old room. He sat down next to the bed after pushing her onto it.
"Get some rest. Tomorrow we brainstorm and clean the place up a little. Perhaps having less rubble around will improve the vibe of the place. Sweet dreams HIkaru."
"Night Kyo. Sweet dreams," she replied tiredly. Her eyes were already closing.
Once he knew she was in a deep sleep he wandered off outside as he did each night. He needed to feed to keep his strength up and he did nto want to take the risk of turning on her. After he found a demon to feed on, he cut off the head and put it on a stake, utilizing remains of the house. He put it far enough away that Hikaru wouldn't see it. He didn't wish to scare her off.
He returned to the house and fell asleep. Hikaru woke him the next morning.
"Kyo? Kyo-kun? You have to ewake up and help me." she called to him.
He opened his eyes and saw her staring at him, her face inches away from his. He stood and stretched with a yawn.
"Let's get started Hikaru. The uicker we clean up, the quicker we can think up an idea."
The two spendt hours cleaning up the debris into a pile.
"Well one thing is certain. We have plenty of firewood for awhile. We'll be warm at least. kyo looked over to see Hikaru sitting down, looking tired.
"Are you hungry Hikaru?" he questioned her. "I'll try and find something. Maybe some meat."
He walked off and retrieved the body of the demon whose head he had put on display last night. He prepared a fire and cooked the remains.
He had already skinned it before cooking it for her. He handed her a forearm.
"I know it's gross but it's all we have. We need to keep our strength up so eat. It tastes better than it looks."
Hikaru hesitantly picked up the meat and took a bite as Kyo watched. Since Kyo had drained all the blood there was no worry about blood-borne disease so he knew it was the safest thing for her to eat. He watched her as he ate his own pieces of the beast.
After their meal break, they returned to work and cleaned up as much rubble as they could. WHile moving some of the remnants, Kyo found a burnt piece of paper with nearby addresses. He showed the list to Hikaru. She recognized the paper as part of her demonic mother's contact list. She jumped up and down in excitement.
"These are my mom's contacts! They are other non-humans that might take us in. They don't live far away in the woods.
Kyo sighed. When she stared at him in confusion he spoke.
"They may take you in but they wont take me. I can guarantee it. I kill demons Hikaru. I wont be popular among those people."
Hikaru's smile faded.
"THen maybe we can just go to each address and ask for a monetary handout? Mom's friends were all lower high-class people so they have some money. If I ask there's a godo chance we could have enough for the house as well as enough to go to school so we can get good paying jobs."
Kyo sighed once again.
"What's wrong Kyo-kun?"
"I'm not overly fond of work," he smirked.
She slapped his arm and laughed.
"Don't do that! I thought something was wrong."
Kyo smirked again.
"There is now. I think you broke my arm."
He held his arm as if he were in pain.
"I'm sorry," was her response.
He grinned and offered her his "injured" hand.
"I'm just kidding." he chuckled.
"Let's go then," he replied.
The two went off to the first address on the list and Kyo let Hikaru do the knocking and talking. The first lady to answer the door turned otu to be the firend they were looking for. Hikaru was given a check with a hefty sum written down on it.
Hikaru thanked the woman and rushed over to Kyo with a big smile.
"She gave us enough to get through high school!"
Kyo smiled at Hikaru offering her his hand again.
"You should put that in a safe place. Let's get going to the next address. Maybe they'll give us enough to rebuild the house."
She accepted his hand and the two walked off together. Meanwhile the kind woman talked to her husband.
"Hikaru seems to have befriended that demon-killing vampire boy."
"That's good. She's in safe hands then. The boy can defend her against those primitive trouble makers that have infested the area and joined with her father."
"But what if the boy finds out that she is partially demon?"
"I don't htink he would harm her for fear of her blood powers."
Kyo and Hikaru made it to the second house on the list and were greeted by the second friend of Hikaru's late mother.
"I was already told about the situation and I called my sister. She has something even more special for you than I do."
The female turned her gaze to Kyo and scowled.
"As for you, you better protect her with your life or its you we come after.
Kyo chuckled.
The female handed over a check and Hikaru rushed ot Kyo with a big smile again.
"It's enough to rebuild the house!" she squealed and hugge dhim.
He hesitated but he wrapped his arms around her.
"That's great news but let's see what this last friend has in store."
The last house was just as beautiful as the last two but there were people packing cars with baggage and boxes. Hikaru ran into the house and Kyo followed. In the kitchen stood a beautiful woman delegating to the movers how to do things.
She turned her head to see Hikaru approaching adn the two embraced. Kyo watched silently in the background. After a few moments the woman noticed his presence.
"I was told about your situation and I've heard about your little travelling companion."
The woman had emphasized her distaste of Kyo in the last two words. She turned to Hikaru again with a smile.
"We're moving Hikaru sweety. Far away from all this demonic crime. We're leaving you this house. It's the least we could do. It's close enough to the human town that you can walk to school but far away enough that noone will complain if you make alot of noise. The humans don't know about it so you have privacy."
The woman then turned to Kyo with a scowl.
"You I want to speak to privately."
The two of them walked down the hall until they were out of earshot of Hikaru.
"What are your intentions for her? what's your angle? You wouldn't save her unless you would benefit. That's how your whole family was."
Kyo clenched his fists and gritted his teeth.
"I am not my parents. I just want to keep her safe and happy. She's a good girl that deserves the best life has to offer."
The demoness smirked.
"Good answer but we have eyes all around so I'll be watching you. You better take good care of her."
Kyo nodded before returning to Hikaru's side.
"So what do you think? Like it?"
Hikaru hugged him once again.
"Welcome home Kyo-kun."
Kyo returned the embrace and responded.
"It's good to be home."
Once he finished he went back downstairs and outside to comfort Hikaru.
