The next morning Hikaru awoke to the smell of someone cooking. Witha ywan she got out of bed and amde her way downstairs. When she took a sharp left turn from the stairs she saw Kyo at the stove.
He turned his head to her when he noticed her. He gave her a smile.
"I hope you like french toast."
She nodded before sitting down at a four person table in the center of the room. After sitting she watched Kyoshiro cook. She noticed that he looked a bit tired.
"Are you arlight Kyo?" she asked.
Kyo smiled but didn't turn towards her. instead keeping his attention on the task of cooking.
"Of course. Why wouldn't I be?" he responded.
"You just seem tired to me." Hikaru replied.
"I do admit to being a bit of a night owl. I usually sleep during the day but before you say or think anything I don't blame you at all for my lack of sleep and you shouldn't either."
He paused and served her the french toast with a glass of milk.
"After breakfast we'll head out to retrieve your clothes. Make sure you're ready for the trip."
He sat down across from her and ate his serving as well. Once they finished he added both plates and glasses to the sink. He smiled and offered her his arm.
"Shall we? Like I said I'll protect you the whole way." he stated.
She accepted the arm and they made their way out of the house and into the woods.
"You alright? You seem frightened Hikaru?" he asked.
She clung tightly to him but he seemed so relaxed. Didn't he know what was in those forests?
"You do know what types of creatures live in these woods don't you Kyoshiro?" she asked.
"You mean the demon that was chasing you the other day?" he replied.
"Yes. Aren't you scared? Even a little?" she asked.
"Not in the least Hikaru. And you don't have to be either as long as I'm around." he replied. "The only thing I'm afraid of is not being able to find you any clean clothes. You know how bad dirty clothes smell?"
They both laughed as they arrived at the remains of what appeared to be a homestead until Hikaru realized where they were.
"This is it," she gulped nervously.
"This is where you ran from? It's only remains now, nothing to worry about." he stated as he held her close to his side and began the final approach to the house.
He pushed open the door and right across the room he could see what appeared to be remains of a female demon. He covered Hikaru's eyes.
"It's not a pretty sight." he explained.
He looked around and found the staircase. He practically pushed Hikaru up it.
"Let's go get you those clothes." he remarked.
Once they were upstairs, he stopped pushing and let Hikaru move on her own so that she could show him to her room. She walked into the second door on the left and there before them was a destroyed room. It looked as if a tornado had ran through it. CLothing and other personal belongings were scattered all over. Drawers were ripped out of the dresser and a lamp was smashed on the floor.
"Grab as many outfits as you like. I'm going to look around. Want to make sure that we're here alone."
With that he left her upstairs and went back to where he saw the female demon. Upon closer insepction of the body, he noticed that she held a letter. He opened and read it before Hikaru came downstairs and saw why he ahd covered her eyes earlier.
"Mother!" she yelled, dropping the clothes she had gathered and running to the remains of the kind demon that had taken her in.
Kyo watched in silence before kneeling down next ot her and resting a hand gently on her back.
"She left you this Hikaru." he said and handed her the letter.
Through teary eyes Hikaru managed ot read the letter.
"Dear Sweet Hikaru, if you are reading this, then I must no longer be among the living. I pray this letter finds you well. First know that I love you. Second, know that everything I own now goes to you should Kana become deceased as well. I pray you find someone to live with you and who will protect you from the harm that befell me. I will be watching over you always, Saori."
Kyo sat behind Hikaru and hugged her close to him.
"I'm sorry Hikaru. I know it's not much comfort right now but I'm not going anywhere. I will always protect you for as long as we both shall live." he stopped speaking for a moment to see if she would respond. "The least we can do is give her a proper burial. I'll start digging. Please take as much time as you need to say your farewells."
With that he walked outside and began digging a hole for a grave. It took him a few hours but he dug a proper sized hole for her mother. He walked inside and took blankets from upstairs. He brought them down and wrapped Saori's body in them. he then picked her up over his shoulders and carried her outside. Hikaru helped by holding up Saori's feet. Together they gently placed her down in the grave that Kyo had dug and reburied her. Kyo hugged Hikaru again and let her cry on his shoulder.
After approximately five minutes, Kyo walked Hikaru back into the house and he gathered the clothes she had retrieved from upstairs. He turned to her and spoke softly.
"Let's get going Hikaru before whoever did this returns. They might want to finish the job. We can go home."
She walked silently next to him, stopping now and then to let a few more tears escape. When they made it back to Kyo's place, all they saw was rubble.
"They destroyed my home!" he growled. "MY father built that himself!"
He collapsed to his knees and roared loudly.
"Damn them!" he muttered.
He then remembered that he wasn't alone. He turned to see Hikaru crying again.
"Why are you crying Hikaru?"
He approached her as he spoke.
"This is my fault. They know I'm staying with you and that's why theyd estroyed your home. I'm sorry. It's my fault."
Kyo smiled kindly at her and looked her in the eyes.
"You silly girl. I don't blame you for this whatsoever. Neither should you but this does mean that I must take advantage of your hospitality and stay with you at your inherited home."
She wiped a tear form her eyes and attempted a smile.
"It's no problem Kyo-kun. I should thank you after all for everything you've done and I owe you my life."
She gave him a smile tinted with sadness as she held out a hand to him.
"Let's go home Kyo-kun."
He turned his head to her when he noticed her. He gave her a smile.
