Fear was all she felt as she ran as fast as her legs would carry her. The young girl was beginning to tire as it had chased her for at least a mile by now.
She could smell it nearing her. It smelled of blood and death. Its image still flashed in and out of her vision.
Tears rolled down her cheeks as she thought about why she was running. She could picture the scene so clearly.
It was a normal night for Hikaru as she played in the house with her adopted demonic family. Her mother had been killed by her demonic father a mere week ago.
A knock came from the door and the kind, female demon that Hikaru had come to look to as a second mother stood in fear for a few moments after opening the door only enough to see who was outside. The children had stopped their game to watch their mother get pierced through the shoulder.
As this occurred, the mother turned as she staggered and rushed the children down a hidden stair under the floor. Hikaru and her sibling knew what to do. They climbed down the stairs and followed the hidden tunnel to its opposite end. They ascended another staircase until their path was blocked by a trap door. The demonic girl opened the lid enough to peak out and see if the coast was clear.
Just then the lid flew open and a demon stood in front of the two with a fanged grin.
"Thought you could escape little ones? Naught! Naughty! You need to be punished."
As the demon finished its sentence it lashed out with clawed hand at the young girl Hikaru loved as a sister. It was over in an instant. The girl was dead.
Though frightened, Hikaru knew what she must do. She ran. She ran through the woods as fast as she could.
She let herself look back to see if she managed to escape the creature. As she did, she tripped. She crawled backwards on all fours to the nearest tree and frantically panned her eyes from side to side. She didn't see any movement.
The next second she was lifted into the air by the throat. It had caught up to her.
Just as it seemed that her end was near, she heard a voice yell. She couldn't make out what it said as her world faded into darkness.
She awoke later in a strange room. It was daylight. She looked around the room. It looked nice enough. The bed was comfortable and it was right next to a windo. There was a large dresser against one of the side walls. Next to the dresser was a door and on the opposite wall from her was another door. The other wall was blank and made of stone.
As she was getting used to her surroundings, she heard a knock at the door opposite from her.
She hesitated before answering and when the words managed to escape her lips. they stuttered out.
"Who...who's there?" she inquired.
A calm voice from the other side of the door replied.
"The owner of the bed you're laying in." it responded.
It was a young male voice. The owner opened the door to the room and before Hikaru stood a young boy close to her age in appearance.
"I brought you something to eat. Figured you would be hungry after all the running you must have done."
He began to approach her with tray of food in ahnd. She backed away as far she could, which wasn't very far since she was already against a wall. When he noticed how frightened she was he stopped.
"I wouldn't rescue you just to kill you myself. The food isn't poisoned either so relax and eat," he stated.
"Who are you? Where am I? Why did you save me?" she asked.
"So many questions," he sighed. "If you start eating I'll answer them one at a time."
He approached her again and set the tray down in front of her on the bed. He took a step backward and sat indian style on the floor. She hesitated but eventually pulled the tray close and began to take small portions of the meal he had prepared.
"How is it? To you liking I hope?"
He smirked up at her as he watched her eat. She looked at him as she took another bite.
"Questions," she said with her mouth full.
"Oh yeah," he replied and stood. He bowed at the waist to her before continuing. "My name is Kyoshiro Sonada. You may call me Kyo for short. As I stated you are in my house. You are safe from demons here. As for why I saved you, I have to think about that one."
He smirked at her again and began to think.
"I don't really have a reason as to why I saved you other than that it seemed like the right thing to do."
Hikaru swallowed a mouthful of food before responding.
"I don't understand," she said.
"What aren't you clear about?" he replied.
"How could a boy not much older than me live out here alone?"
Kyo's eyes glanced down and away from hers.
"Let's just say I'm not a normal boy."
His eyes turned back to hers after he finished speaking.
"I don't have any girl clothes around so first thing tomorrow we'll have to find you some."
"I know where we can find some but it's too dangerous to go there."
Ky turned back to her and smiled before responding.
"That settles it. You can lead me there tomorrow. I'll protect you no matter what happens."
Then his eyes grew wide as if just realizing something.
"I almost forgot to ask you your name."
When she hesitated to answer he spoke again.
"It's only fair since I told you mine already."
"My...my name is Hikaru."
Kyo smiled across the room at her.
"Wel Hikaru it's a pleasure. You should get up and get acquainted to the place. You can go into any room you like."
Kyo spent hours showing her his humble abode.
"It's no five star hotel but it's safe as long as I'm here."
Just as it started getting dark, Kyo rushed Hikaru inside the house and locked the doors and windows.
"Demons are more active at night. It would be best if we got washed up and ready for bed. I'll bring you something for dinner in a little bit. You can have that room you were in and the door next ot the dresser is the bathroom."
With that he sent her upstairs and began preparing a meal for her.
Half an hour later he brought her up a meal on a tray again. He sat and watched her eat again as she consumed the meal more readily this time. When she finished he grabbed both trays and took them downstairs to be washed.
He walked back up to her room and she was already asleep in the bed. He grinned as he walked over and tucked her in.
He whispered "Sweet dreams Hikaru," before leaving the room quietly and stalked off into the surrounding woods to find a meal for himself.
